Tuesday's Totally Useful Information

Today's totally useful information: Gas and Gagging

Let's face it, we all get gas and we all gag once in a while. A friend of mine in our old condominiums area used to gag all the time when she was pregnant and she found this little trick that helped her not lose it nearly as much. She found that if, when she was gagging, she would put her index finger in between her two clavicle bones and pressed down against her throat, it would stop the gag reflex and she wouldn't end up throwing up. Next time you're feeling queasy and may just lose it, try this and it might help you.
Now, onto gas. It sucks when your in pain from it and this same girl who taught me the non-gag reflex thing, also taught me that you can massage it to make it move. I know this isn't the prettiest of subjects but it might help people if they know about it. She is a massage therapist and her son used to get gas pretty bad and she found that if she massaged it downward, it would help him feel better.

So, there you go, I hope that this helps someone out in a time of being uncomfortable.

Happy TTUI!

Introducing Totally Useful Information

So, I like to give advice. I love it when others benefit from it so, I'm going to start a weekly piece of advice called Tuesday's Totally Useful Information a.k.a. TTUI. Now, I'm not an expert on anything but every one can benefit from some good advice at times; so, please take it or leave it but I hope it helps someone someday.

Today's Totally Useful Information: Losing Weight: Counting Calories

One pound equals 3500 calories. Determining how many calories you need daily is your first step to losing weight.
Taken from about.com:
"There is something called the Harris-Benedict formula that uses a mathematical formula to determine your caloric needs based on your sex, weight, and activity level; the result is known as your Basal Metabolic Rate. The U.S. government provides a chart of suggested daily caloric needs as part of the My Pyramid.gov Web site. Additionally, Calorie Count Plus allows you to type in your weight, activity level and weight loss goals and receive caloric intake recommendations when you sign up for a free account."

Personally, I've found a little formula that seems to get an approximate amount of calories you need to maintain the weight you want.
1. Decide what weight you want to be.
2. Figure out what activity level you fall under (11 inactive, 12 moderately active, 13 Very active)
3. Multiply your desired weight by the number by the level of activity that you will fall under. There you have the number of calories you need to meet each day in order to be that weight. You can also take your current weight and times it by your current activity level and that will show you what amount of calories you are currently consuming. You can then determine how many calories you need to cut everyday in order to get to your goal weight.

One last thing, I've found that if I remain active, I'm able to have a few splurge moments during the week, which is motivation for me to be able to continue maintaining my weight and even losing some if I'm very careful on the other times. I feel that if you consider anything "off limits" you will never succeed because you're going to want that even more until you give in and feel awful about it if you eat it. Just eat everything moderately and eventually you'll reach your goals.

Remember it's the safest and most reliable way to lose and keep the weight off if you only lose about 1/2 to 2 lb.s per week. Any more and most likely, you'll gain that weight back eventually.

Happy TTUI!

Happy Fall Day!

Even though I'm super sorry to see summer go, I'm enjoying the thought of the smell of warm cider and harvest home that will soon permeate our home with our Welcome Home Aroma scents that we got over the weekend. Fall is nice, for the most part. I'm a spring kind of gal and summer's got it's hooks deep in me too. Summer brings flip-flops and sandals and the feel of the cooler air pushing through the hallway from the swamp cooler. I enjoy the freedom of the spring and summer to leave the back door open most days and let the sunlight and breezes come through and the warm nights and cool mornings of summer. The skies in the summer are amazing also. I love being outside and able to do picnics and swing on the swings and play in the parks with my girls.

Nonetheless, I do enjoy the changes that come with fall. I like the pretty colors of fall and the anticipation of baking pies and smelling apple cinnamon candles and sipping warm soup and eating yummy thick bread. I don't know what it is about fall but I always feel like I need to break out the crafting supplies and craft up some wonderful confection; it's like clockwork, every fall.

I like the changing of the season also because I get to break out the fall sweaters and long jeans that I haven't worn for a while. The chill in the air is just so crisp and refreshing after a hot summer. I love still being able to be outside a bit also in the fall and the best part? Halloween. I'll always love Halloween! So, here's to hoping for nice fall temp.'s and lovely fall colors staying for a while and to an awesome Halloween! Happy fall y'all!

Yikes,

I'm finally teaching at Studio 1 now and they have me teaching a JR. and Sr. Cheer class and and an adult toning and conditioning class. So, for the cheer classes, I've given in and actually done a toe-touch, or at least my version of a toe-touch instead of just a mock toe-touch. Now keep in mind, I haven't been a cheerleader since '94-'95. Not. A. Good. Idea. My inner thighs hurt like you know what and it's been two days since I did the stupid things. Two days people.

btw, if you'd like to come and check out the adult toning and conditioning class, the first class is free. Tuesday evenings from 8-9. Come get toned and conditioned.

There are words, I'm just too mad to say them...

Click Here to Read. I cannot believe that this sort of thing is happening in our world today. If only every country could have the freedoms we enjoy.
